In order to get into the department store, I needed a connection. I made my way back to the motel, going over possible people to reach out to that might still work there, and decided that I needed to take greater care in who I trusted. I knew I could trust Ned, and I knew I could trust Rebecca. Apart from themâ¦I wasnât sure. I couldnât risk the entire operation on making the wrong phone call.
So, I called Rebecca to see if she could help me out.
âOh, gosh, Barbaraâ¦â she said when she answered the phone. âI donât knowâ¦â
âWhat about Tiffany?â I asked. âThat girl who worked in shoes? You and she were pretty close, werenât you? She didnât know me â maybe sheâd be â â
âNo, Barb, thatâs not itâ¦â she said, then I heard her sigh on the other line. âIâm not â good at lying.â
I laughed. âThatâs what youâre worried about?â
âIâm going to have to lie, arenât I?â she asked. âIâll have to tell her all about this made up person that you are trying to be, and Iâm going to mess it up somehow, I just know it.â
âNo, no, itâs all right,â I said with another chuckle. âYou donât have to lie for me. All I want is for you to contact someone who probably wonât ask too many questions, and say, âI have a friend who is looking for a temporary job. She needs to start right away. Do you think you could help?â All that is true! I do need your help, and I do need a job! If I could skip over some of the background stuff to get hired quickly, that might save me from anyone finding out my real identity. Or at least, it might put that off long enough for me to do what I need.â
âOkay,â Rebecca said with somewhat less reservation. âI think I could do that. You said Tiffany? I havenât talked to her in a long timeâ¦â
âDoes she still work there?â I asked.
âI think so,â Rebecca said.
âI donât want to put you out, but this really might be my only possible avenue at the moment,â I said. âI need some way to get into the store, and getting hired would get me the closest.â
âAll right,â she said. âIâll see what I can do.â
âThank you!â I exclaimed.
Her return call came more rapidly than I would have expected. Immediately, I heard the relief in Rebeccaâs voice. âShe said she thinks that she can help you,â she said. âI asked if it was okay if you gave her a call at home, and she said sheâd be happy to talk to you. I hope thatâs all right.â
âThatâs perfect!â I said. Iâd been rehearsing and jotting down ideas for my pretend life while I waited. âThanks so much, Rebecca.â
âYouâre welcome,â she said. âShe actually seemed relieved that there are people interested in working there. Apparently, there have been quite a few people who have left the company in the past months.â
âThatâs odd,â I said, brow furrowing.
